Waterside location 'adds 20 percent to property value'

Homes based close to water attract a 20 per cent higher price than comparable properties elsewhere, an estate agency has said. Hampton International has said the trend had been seen in the growing popularity of homes by the banks of the Thames in Marlow, Henley and Windsor. Ian Westerling, regional sales director in the Thames and Chilterns region, said: "Riverside properties were extremely popular in 2007 and this has not changed at the start of this year, despite the adjustment in the property market," adding that the "tranquillity and peace" of being close to water was also boosting the prices of properties near lakes, streams and canals. The projected increase in house values has been used as an argument for restoring old waterways. Stockport and Manchester Canal Society website lists this as one of the reasons for its campaign to restore the Stockport canal, which was filled in during the 1960s and 70s.
