Eco-town faces opposition

Published on: 05/02/2008

Proposals for an eco-town in Warwickshire have been met with fierce opposition at the weekend as hundreds of local villagers marched in protests against plans for 6,000 new homes to be built on the site of a former military base. Those opposed to the development of the Long Marston site have argued that the area's infrastructure will not be able to support such an expansion in the local population and that there will be increases in traffic congestion and pollution. The MP for the area, John Maples, has also come out against the scheme and has been joined by Peter Luff, member for neighbouring Mid Worcestershire, the Stratford Herald reported last week. However, councillors in the district of East Hampshire have taken a more positive view of eco-towns and are hoping their bid for a site at Whitehill and Bordon will get the green light from the government. Deputy chief executive Daphne Gardner told the Petersfield Post and Bordon Post: "We are keeping everything crossed."
