Ski investors told to think high to beat warming

Published on: 08/02/2008

Those looking to invest in overseas property in ski resorts have been told to look for high-altitude venues if they want to be sure of beating off the effects of climate change. Steve Thomas, managing director of Alpine Property Developments, said many investors had been concerned about the potential of mild winters to ruin the ski season through a lack of snow. He stated that the mild European winter of 2006-07 had been coupled with record snowfall in North America, whereas this winter has seen the roles reversed. "The unpredictability of the snow in the different resorts around the world from year to year is currently leaving an open mind with the majority of ski property hunters as well on global warming," he commented. Those who wanted to be sure of snow should look at higher altitude resorts such as those in Colorado, Mr Thomas advised. Data from the Swiss Association of Winter Sports Resorts has revealed that the winter season has been shortened by 12 days since 1995 due to milder weather.
